We’re Getting Behind Out & About Live’s Back British Holidays Campaign, Will You Too?

There’s something truly special about holidays in Britain. Whether it’s building sandcastles on Cornish beaches to dodging rain clouds in the Cairngorms, there’s an incredible variety of destinations and activities to be enjoyed in the UK. Many of us have fond early memories of holidays with parents and grandparents. However, unfortunately, tourism in Britain is not what it once was.

The UK’s domestic tourism sector is a vital asset to the nation’s economy and cultural identity, contributing over £31 billion annually through overnight stays and up to £72 billion through combined direct and indirect contributions, as well as directly employing over 300,000 people.

In recent years though, UK tourism has taken a sharp downturn. There are tens of millions fewer visitors predicted in the next four years, which could lead to a cumulative loss of £23.2 billion for the industry and could jeopardise thousands of jobs.

This has led Out & About Live, the online home to the outdoor titles, The Motorhomers’ Magazine, What Motorhome, Caravan, and Campervan, to launch its ‘Back British Holidays’ campaign and petition to the Government.

‘Back British Holidays’ is Out & About Live calling on the Government to to provide greater support for the UK’s domestic tourism industry. This support will help small businesses to manage rising costs and will give holidaymakers greater incentives to visit British hotspots.

At the heart of Out & About Live’s campaign is the petition they have launched and plan to present to the Government. Through the petition, Out & About Live is urging the Government to strengthen its partnership with the domestic tourism industry, champion UK attractions and reinforce the benefits of holidaying at home.

Out & About Live believes the Government could enhance promotion of domestic tourism with the launch of an improved domestic tourism campaign. This would utilise television and digital advertising, advertising in public spaces including airports, train stations and city centres, and would take advantage of the opportunities which social media and influencers provide.

In addition to this, Out & About Live would also like to see structured meetings organised between local authorities, tourism business owners, government departments, and key UK holiday stakeholders to drive a collaborative approach to tourism promotion.

Further to this, they propose the launch of a platform which would celebrate the power of British tourism through storytelling. This would involve the creation of a platform which invites the public to share personal stories and memories from UK holidays. This could take the form of a dedicated website or could utilise social media, and allow people to post photos, videos and anecdotes from their favourite British holidays.

The catalyst to greater Government promotion of domestic tourism will be Out & Live’s petition. With enough signatures, this petition will be discussed in Parliament and could lead to real change for British tourism.

At Venture Caravans & Motorhomes, we are very much behind this campaign. We too believe Britain has so much to offer tourists. Whilst we sell vehicles which have the capabilities to tour Europe and beyond, there is something special about these shores and many of our customers will choose a British destination as the first place to take their vehicles.

We’ve lent our voice to this petition and are asking you to do so too.

We hope you join us in signing Out & About Live’s petition and recognise the diversity and richness Britain has to offer as a holiday destination. From days at the seaside and countryside hikes, to visits to castles, parks, and historic towns, there’s a lot to be said for spending time within these shores. Choosing domestic travel gives you the opportunity to explore the many hidden gems accessible within our own borders.

Discussing the campaign, Out & Live’s spokesperson for ‘Back British Holidays’, Daniel Attwood, had the following to say: “As someone who has been involved in this industry for over 15 years, I’ve seen how integral UK holidays are to our economy, communities, and culture. The forecasts we’ve published paint a sobering picture of a 32% decline in holidays and a potential £23.2 billion loss to the economy. This is about protecting businesses, supporting jobs, and preserving the traditions of British holidays. This campaign is a call to action to recognise the value of holidaying in the UK.”

In support of the ‘Back British Holidays’ campaign, several members of our team have begun promoting the power of British tourism through their own storytelling. They’ve done this by reminiscing about their favourite British holidays destinations. You will be able to see our team’s British holiday memories in the video published by Out & About Live, below:
